Jan de Beijer was a prolific draughtsman known for his precise topographical records of the Dutch Republic. This work, dated 11 September 1750, captures the village of Krimpen aan den IJssel with the meticulous observation characteristic of his practice. The composition employs a classic Dutch perspective, framing the river scene with a large, leafy tree on the left and the corner of a building on the right. This framing technique draws the eye toward the distant village silhouette, where a church spire and windmill punctuate the horizon.

The artist uses pen and ink to define the structural elements, such as the brickwork of the foreground wall and the rigging of the small sailing vessels on the water. Grey wash is applied with restraint to suggest the soft, diffused light of a late summer day and to model the voluminous clouds that dominate the sky. A lone figure stands in the lower right corner, leaning against the wall and observing the river, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the quiet rural setting.

De Beijer travelled extensively throughout the Netherlands, producing thousands of drawings that serve as historical documents of eighteenth-century townscapes and rural life.
