Eisen, a prolific artist of the late Edo period, was known for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, and his ability to integrate human figures with travel motifs.

The background provides a sense of place, showing the typical activity of a busy road station, including travellers carried in palanquins and the sparse, windswept trees characteristic of the Kiso Kaidō route.
