This engraving, titled Hispania, is a work by the Flemish printmaker Johann Sadeler I, after a design by Adriaen de Weerdt. It forms part of a series of allegorical representations of the four continents, a popular subject in late sixteenth-century European art. The composition presents a personification of Spain as a regal female figure, seated beneath a tree and holding a sceptre. Beside her stands a soldier in armour, clutching a flag and resting his foot upon a shield.

The scene is dense with symbolic objects that communicate the perceived power and global reach of the Spanish Empire during the period. A globe sits in the foreground, showing the Americas, while a chest overflowing with coins and jewels suggests the wealth extracted from overseas territories. A peacock, often associated with pride or vanity, stands near the seated figure. In the background, the artist depicts a coastal town with ships, referencing the maritime trade and naval strength of the nation.
