This engraving by Cornelis Cort, dated 1577, reproduces a composition by the Italian painter Federico Barocci. Cort, a Dutch printmaker who spent his final years in Rome, was instrumental in translating the painterly qualities of Italian Renaissance and Mannerist works into the medium of copperplate engraving.
