Description
A detailed six-panel Japanese folding screen depicting the traditional horse racing festival at the Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto.
This six-panel folding screen depicts the traditional horse racing festival held at the Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto. Such screens, known as byobu, were functional objects used to divide interior spaces while providing visual interest. The composition follows the conventions of early Edo-period genre painting, where the activities of the aristocracy and commoners are presented within a unified architectural setting.
The scene captures the kinetic energy of the race, with riders mounted on horses moving across the lower register. The upper sections show spectators gathered on raised platforms, observing the event with formal composure. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, which allows for the simultaneous viewing of multiple narrative elements. Gold clouds, or 'suiun', are used to separate different zones of activity, a technique that provides structure to the busy composition.
The colour palette relies on earth tones, muted greens, and faded pigments, which have softened over the centuries. The figures are rendered with precise, thin lines, characteristic of the Kano school style that dominated Japanese painting during this era. The architecture is depicted with minimal depth, focusing instead on the social hierarchy of the participants. This work provides a window into the cultural life of Kyoto during the seventeenth century, documenting the attire, customs, and social rituals associated with the Kamo festival. The screen remains a significant example of how historical events were translated into decorative art for the homes of the elite.
