Description
A bold, expressionist cityscape by Raoul Dufy, capturing the architecture of Munich through saturated colours and simplified, assertive forms.
Raoul Dufy painted Houses in Munich during a period of significant stylistic transition. Following his initial engagement with the Fauvist movement, Dufy travelled to Germany in 1909, where he encountered the work of artists associated with Die Brücke. This experience prompted a shift in his approach, moving away from the lighter, more decorative sensibilities of his earlier French works toward a heavier, more structured application of paint.
The composition displays a deliberate departure from naturalistic representation. The architecture is rendered with bold, simplified forms, while the colour palette relies on stark contrasts between deep, saturated blues and warm, earthy reds. The sky is a turbulent mass of dark pigment, pressing down upon the urban structures below. Two figures occupy the foreground, their forms reduced to minimal silhouettes that echo the verticality of the surrounding trees.
Unlike the fluid, calligraphic style that would define his later career, this work exhibits a raw, almost primitive energy. The brushwork is thick and assertive, prioritising emotional resonance over precise detail. The spatial arrangement is compressed, creating a sense of enclosure that reflects the artist's reaction to the German environment. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow against the stark geometry of the buildings, Dufy captures a specific mood rather than a literal depiction of the city. This piece offers a rare glimpse into the artist's experimental phase, demonstrating his ability to adapt his visual language to new surroundings while maintaining his distinct interest in the expressive potential of colour and form.
