Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work during the early twentieth century. His practice often involved painting directly onto oilcloth, a material readily available in the taverns and shops of Tiflis where he lived. This choice of substrate contributes to the unique surface quality of his works, which often feature dark, atmospheric backgrounds that contrast with the simplified, bold forms of his subjects.

In this composition, a stag stands in a forest setting, rendered with a directness that characterises Pirosmani's approach.
