Description
A classic 1839 lithograph by Honoré Daumier from the Émotions Parisiennes series, depicting a man contemplating a meal with limited funds.
This lithograph belongs to the series Émotions Parisiennes, published in the French satirical journal Le Charivari in 1839. Honoré Daumier, a master of social observation, depicts a solitary man standing before the window of a café-restaurant. The figure, dressed in a worn frock coat and top hat, gazes at the food displayed inside. The title, J'ai trois sous!, reveals the man's limited financial means, as he calculates whether his small change is sufficient for a meal.
Daumier employs his characteristic draughtsmanship to capture the physical reality of the Parisian streets. The man's posture, with his hands in his pockets and his thin frame, conveys a sense of quiet desperation. Through the glass, the interior of the café is visible, where other patrons sit at a table, oblivious to the observer outside. The contrast between the warmth of the interior and the cold, detached position of the man on the pavement is a hallmark of Daumier's social commentary.
As a printmaker, Daumier utilised the lithographic medium to reach a wide audience. His work often focused on the mundane struggles of the urban population, moving away from the idealised subjects common in academic art. The composition is structured to draw the eye from the man's profile toward the food in the window, creating a narrative of longing. The shading is executed with precise strokes, defining the texture of the man's clothing and the architectural elements of the shop front. This piece remains a clear example of nineteenth-century French social observation, documenting the economic disparities present in the city during the July Monarchy. It is a work that captures a fleeting moment of human experience, rendered with both empathy and a sharp, satirical edge.
