Description
A striking 1950 gouache by Wifredo Lam, featuring a totemic, hybrid figure rendered in a sophisticated palette of monochrome tones.
Ibaye (1950) is a representative work by the Cuban artist Wifredo Lam, created during a period when he successfully synthesised European modernist techniques with the visual language of Afro-Cuban culture. Lam, who spent significant time in Europe and interacted with the Surrealist circle in Paris, returned to Cuba in 1941. This return prompted a shift in his practice, moving away from purely European abstraction toward a personal iconography that drew upon Santería and the natural environment of his homeland.
The composition of Ibaye is structured around a central, totemic figure that dominates the pictorial space. The figure is rendered with sharp, angular lines and a restricted palette of greys, blacks, and off-whites. This reduction in colour allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the geometric forms and the organic, mask-like elements that define the subject. The figure possesses a hybrid quality, blending human, animal, and vegetal characteristics, which is a hallmark of Lam's approach to the human form.
Technically, the work demonstrates Lam's mastery of gouache, using washes to create depth within the background while maintaining a flat, graphic quality in the foreground elements. The decorative motifs etched into the lighter sections of the composition suggest ritualistic symbols or textile patterns, further grounding the work in a specific cultural context. By merging the formal rigour of Cubism with the dreamlike, irrational associations of Surrealism, Lam created a visual vocabulary that addresses identity and heritage. This piece functions as a study of form and spirit, where the verticality of the central figure suggests a presence that is both grounded and otherworldly. It remains a clear example of how Lam navigated the intersection of international modernism and his own Caribbean roots.
