Idool met versluierde blik - Lucebert

Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he was associated with the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and a rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. This work, titled Idool met versluierde blik (Idol with Veiled Gaze), dates from 1984 and demonstrates the artist's characteristic economy of line.

The drawing presents a simplified, almost mask-like human visage. The artist uses minimal graphite strokes to define the facial structure, focusing on the essential geometry of the features. The eyes are rendered as sharp, almond-shaped voids, while the nose is reduced to a stark, shaded vertical form. A heavy, smudged application of graphite creates a dense mass at the top of the head, suggesting hair or a cap, which contrasts with the clean, white space of the paper. The mouth is indicated by a single, horizontal line, contributing to the overall sense of detachment and stillness.

Lucebert's approach to portraiture often bypassed psychological realism in favour of archetypal representation. By stripping away extraneous detail, he invites the viewer to engage with the figure as a symbol rather than a specific individual. The work reflects his broader practice, where the act of drawing is treated as an immediate, unmediated gesture. The date, inscribed in the upper right corner, anchors the piece within his later period, where his graphic work became increasingly refined and precise.
