Heorhiy Narbut, a central figure in the development of Ukrainian graphic design, produced this illustration for Ivan Kotlyarevsky's travesty of the Aeneid. The work reflects Narbut's deep engagement with historical motifs, specifically the aesthetics of the Ukrainian Baroque and the Cossack era. His approach to book illustration prioritised a synthesis of typography and image, where the decorative elements possess as much weight as the narrative figures.
