Ivan Bilibin, a central figure of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, developed a distinct graphic style inspired by traditional Russian folk art, woodblock prints, and medieval manuscript illumination. His approach relies on bold, black ink outlines that define the forms, which are then filled with flat, muted washes of colour.

The composition is divided into two distinct narrative planes. In the upper section, the peasant hero Mikula is shown ploughing his field, a quiet contrast to the activity below. The lower portion features the druzhina, or retinue, of the prince Volga. The riders are depicted in a rhythmic, repetitive formation, their spears creating a forest of vertical lines that draw the eye upward. Bilibin employs a decorative approach to the horses and armour, using geometric patterns and stylised motifs that flatten the perspective and emphasise the graphic quality of the work.

Bilibin spent years travelling through northern Russia, documenting wooden architecture and traditional embroidery. These observations inform the specific ornamentation seen in the riders' gear and the stylised clouds in the background. The work avoids realistic shading, opting instead for a clear, legible visual language that was well-suited for the book illustrations he produced throughout his career. The limited palette of ochre, sage green, and soft blue reflects the natural pigments often found in the folk art traditions he sought to preserve.
