Description

A striking silhouette illustration by Heorhiy Narbut for the fables of Ivan Krylov, showcasing the artist's mastery of graphic design and negative space.

This work by Heorhiy Narbut belongs to his celebrated series of illustrations for the fables of Ivan Krylov, published in 1911. Narbut, a central figure in the Ukrainian graphic arts scene, was heavily influenced by the silhouette tradition and the aesthetic principles of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) movement. His approach to book design prioritised a harmonious relationship between typography, ornament, and image.

The composition employs a stark, high-contrast silhouette technique. A bearded figure in traditional attire stands on the left, holding a sack to receive coins falling from a cornucopia held by a winged, celestial figure. Below, a wheel symbolises the turning of fortune. The image is framed by a clean, geometric border, while a secondary decorative panel at the base features a stylised floral motif and the artist's initials. This focus on flat, graphic clarity is characteristic of Narbut's mature style, which often drew upon historical motifs, folk art, and neoclassical rigour.

Narbut's mastery of the silhouette allowed him to convey narrative tension without the need for internal detail or shading. By reducing the figures to their essential outlines, he created a sense of timelessness, fitting for the allegorical nature of Krylov's fables. The use of negative space is deliberate, guiding the viewer's eye across the scene with precision. This print offers a clear example of early twentieth-century graphic design, where the page itself is treated as a unified, balanced object. The work remains a primary example of how Narbut synthesised European graphic traditions with his own distinct decorative sensibility, resulting in a visual language that is both disciplined and highly expressive.
