Description
A fine art print of the Imaki-gire, a classical Japanese calligraphy fragment by Fujiwara no Norinaga, featuring fluid kana script from the Kokin wakashū.
This fragment, identified as the Imaki-gire, represents a portion of the Kokin wakashū, the first imperial anthology of Japanese poetry compiled in the early tenth century. The calligraphy is attributed to Fujiwara no Norinaga, a courtier and calligrapher active during the late Heian period. The work displays the kana script, a syllabary developed for the Japanese language, which allowed for the fluid, cursive expression seen here.
The characters flow across the paper with a rhythmic quality, demonstrating the mastery of brush control characteristic of the period. The ink varies in density, creating a sense of movement as the lines connect and taper. The paper itself is of a warm, neutral tone, providing a subtle background that allows the dark ink to remain the primary focus. The vertical columns of text are arranged with a balance between the density of the characters and the negative space surrounding them.
Such fragments were often preserved as individual sheets after larger scrolls were divided, a common practice in the appreciation of classical Japanese calligraphy. The Imaki-gire is recognised for its elegance and the restraint of its execution. It reflects the aesthetic values of the Heian court, where the ability to write with grace was a requirement for the aristocracy. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink strokes, offering a view into the tradition of Japanese literary arts. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the relationship between the written word and the physical surface of the paper.
