A powerful abstract work by Jay DeFeo, featuring heavy impasto and a dramatic diagonal fissure in a monochromatic palette.
Incision is a work by Jay DeFeo, an artist associated with the Beat generation and the San Francisco art scene during the mid-twentieth century. This piece demonstrates her approach to materiality, where paint is applied in heavy, sculptural layers. The surface possesses a physical presence, built up through the accumulation of oil pigment to create a rugged, geological topography. The composition is dominated by a diagonal fissure that cuts across the dark, monochromatic field. This central mark suggests a rupture or a physical opening within the dense impasto. DeFeo worked in a period where the boundaries between painting and sculpture were often blurred, and this work reflects that tension. The palette is restricted to shades of charcoal, slate, and muted earth tones, allowing the focus to remain on the tactile quality of the paint application. DeFeo often spent years on a single canvas, repeatedly adding and removing material. This process resulted in surfaces that record the passage of time and the physical exertion of the artist. Incision captures this intensity, presenting a form that appears to be in a state of constant flux. The work does not rely on representational imagery, instead inviting the viewer to engage with the raw, unmediated texture of the medium itself. By stripping away colour and narrative, DeFeo directs attention to the interplay of light and shadow across the uneven surface, where the ridges and valleys of the paint create their own internal rhythm.
