Description
A detailed albumen silver print by Giorgio Sommer depicting the ancient Roman amphitheatre at Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius in the background.
This albumen silver print by Giorgio Sommer captures the interior of the Roman amphitheatre at Pompeii. Sommer, a German photographer who established a studio in Naples, became one of the most prolific documentarians of Italian antiquities during the nineteenth century. His work provided European audiences with a clear view of archaeological sites that were then undergoing systematic excavation.
The composition presents the elliptical arena from an elevated vantage point. The tiered stone seating, or cavea, curves around the central space, which remains largely clear of debris. In the distance, the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius rises against the horizon, providing a stark reminder of the volcanic event that preserved the site. The clarity of the image allows for a close inspection of the masonry and the structural layout of the ancient venue.
Sommer utilised the albumen process, which was standard for the era, to achieve a high level of detail and a characteristic sepia tone. The print is presented within a decorative border, typical of the photographic albums produced for tourists and scholars during the Grand Tour period. By documenting the physical state of the ruins, Sommer contributed to the visual record of classical archaeology. His photographs were widely distributed, influencing the public perception of Pompeii as a site of historical enquiry. This print offers a direct look at the architectural remains as they appeared over a century ago, maintaining the stillness of the site without the presence of modern visitors.
