Johannes Jelgerhuis, a Dutch painter and actor, captures a specific industrial scene in this work: the 'Stoockhuys' or distillery of the apothecary A. d'Ailly, located near the Zaagmolenpoort in Amsterdam. The composition focuses on the technical environment of early nineteenth-century pharmaceutical production.
