Description
A refined monochrome Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a social sake gathering in a traditional Japanese interior, attributed to Hasegawa Mitsunobu.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Mitsunobu depicts a quiet social gathering within a traditional Japanese interior. The composition centres on three figures engaged in a sake service, a common subject in mid-eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e. The artist employs a clean, linear style, characteristic of the period, to define the figures and the architectural elements of the room.
The scene is framed by sliding screens, or shoji, which provide a sense of spatial depth while maintaining the flat, graphic quality typical of the medium. To the right, a screen decorated with a pine motif adds a decorative element to the background. A tall, slender lamp stands between the figures, casting a soft, implied light over the small table and the sake vessels. The figures are dressed in patterned kimonos, with the artist paying close attention to the varied textures of the fabric through simple, effective line work.
Mitsunobu was active in Kyoto, and his work often reflects the refined, domestic focus of the region's print culture. Unlike the later, more dramatic prints of the Edo period, this piece captures a moment of calm interaction. The figures are positioned in a balanced arrangement, with the seated man serving as the anchor for the composition. The print is executed in a monochrome format, relying on the precision of the carved lines to convey form and volume. The lack of colour allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of patterns and the subtle gestures of the participants. This work provides a window into the social customs of the era, documenting the aesthetic preferences for interior design and attire during the mid-Edo period.
