Description
A late-period work by Henri Matisse, featuring a bold, patterned curtain alongside a view of palm fronds and a bowl of fruit.
Painted in 1948, Interior with Egyptian Curtain is a work from the later period of Henri Matisse. The composition is divided between the interior space and the view through a window. To the right, a heavy curtain with bold, abstract motifs in red, green, and yellow dominates the frame. This textile element acts as a graphic counterpoint to the view outside.
Through the window, the viewer sees palm fronds rendered in a rhythmic, repetitive pattern of blue, green, and yellow. The window frame creates a grid that separates the exterior foliage from the domestic setting. On the table in the foreground, a bowl of fruit sits on a pink surface. The fruit is painted with simplified forms, echoing the decorative approach applied to the curtain and the foliage.
Matisse uses a flattened perspective to unify the different elements of the room. The black background of the curtain provides a stark contrast to the lighter tones of the fruit and the window view. This work demonstrates the artist's focus on colour and pattern during his later years. He balances the decorative qualities of the curtain with the representational elements of the fruit and the palm trees. The painting reflects his interest in the interplay between interior and exterior spaces, a theme he explored throughout his career. By reducing forms to their essential shapes and colours, Matisse creates a visual harmony that prioritises the surface of the canvas. The work is held in the collection of the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
