The portrait is based on an earlier painting by Hans Holbein the Younger, reflecting the common practice of printmakers reproducing famous historical likenesses to circulate them among a wider audience.

Froben is shown in profile, his expression serious and contemplative. The lighting is focused on his face, drawing attention to the fine lines around his eyes and the texture of his skin.
