A dramatic religious composition by Viktor Vasnetsov, depicting the final judgement with a striking contrast between divine order and terrestrial chaos.
Viktor Vasnetsov, a central figure in the Russian Revival movement, painted this monumental composition as part of his extensive work for the St. Vladimir Cathedral in Kyiv. The work depicts the final judgement, a theme that allowed the artist to combine his interest in Byzantine iconography with the dramatic sensibilities of late nineteenth-century Symbolism.
At the top of the composition, Christ sits in judgement, flanked by figures representing the heavenly host. His posture is authoritative, holding a book and a cross, while the surrounding clouds provide a clear separation between the divine realm and the terrestrial events below. The lower portion of the painting is dominated by a central, dark-winged angel who holds a balance, symbolising the weighing of souls. The background is a stark, fiery red, which creates a sense of urgency and chaos. On the left, figures are gathered in prayer, while on the right, the composition descends into the turmoil of the damned, featuring a large serpent and figures in distress.
Vasnetsov was known for his ability to synthesise folk traditions with academic training. This piece demonstrates his command of large-scale narrative painting. The use of colour is deliberate, with the cool, ethereal tones of the upper register contrasting sharply with the warm, aggressive reds of the lower section. The composition is structured around a vertical axis, drawing the eye from the bottom of the frame up to the figure of Christ. The work remains a significant example of religious art from the period, reflecting the artist's deep engagement with Orthodox theology and his technical skill in managing complex, multi-figure arrangements within a constrained, arched space.
