Franz von Stuck, a founding member of the Munich Secession, frequently returned to themes of classical mythology and biblical narrative throughout his career. This work depicts the Old Testament heroine Judith, who is shown standing over the decapitated body of the Assyrian general Holofernes. The composition relies on a stark contrast between the illuminated figure of Judith and the deep, atmospheric shadows that envelop the scene.

Stuck employs a restricted palette, allowing the pale skin of the protagonist and the metallic glint of the sword to emerge from the darkness. The figure of Judith is rendered with a sense of detachment, her expression calm and composed despite the violent nature of the act. The fallen Holofernes is largely obscured by shadow, with only fragments of his form and the purple fabric of his garments visible.
