Description

A detailed Baroque engraving by Gérard Audran depicting the mythological encounter between Juno and Aeolus from Virgil's Aeneid.

This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts a scene from Virgil's Aeneid, where the goddess Juno approaches Aeolus, the king of the winds, to request his assistance in destroying the fleet of Aeneas. The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common format for seventeenth-century reproductive prints that sought to translate the grand scale of painted works into a portable medium. Audran, a master of the burin, employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures and the billowing forms of the clouds.

The interaction between the two deities is rendered with dramatic flair. Juno, positioned on the left, gestures towards the right, where Aeolus sits amidst his subjects. The figures are depicted in a classical style, with flowing drapery and expressive poses that convey the urgency of the narrative. The print captures the tension of the moment, as the winds are prepared to be unleashed upon the sea. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the divine exchange.

Audran was highly regarded for his ability to interpret the works of other masters, often collaborating with painters to disseminate their compositions through print. His technical proficiency allowed him to replicate the tonal qualities of oil paintings, creating depth and volume through the density of his lines. This work reflects the period's fascination with classical literature and the use of mythological subjects to explore themes of power and divine intervention. The print serves as a record of the artistic dialogue between the painterly traditions of the Baroque era and the technical rigour of the French printmaking school. It remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of seventeenth-century art production, where the engraver acted as a bridge between the original painterly vision and the wider public.
