Kawase travelled extensively throughout Japan, documenting the changing seasons and the quiet atmosphere of rural locations. His approach combined traditional Japanese woodblock techniques with Western principles of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. The composition focuses on the small wooden shrine structure, which sits upon a pier extending into the water. The dark, warm tones of the building contrast with the cool, blue hues of the lake and the grey sky. Snow covers the roof of the shrine, the surrounding trees, and the shoreline, creating a sense of stillness.
