This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts the high-ranking courtesan Karakoto of the Chojiya house during a formal procession. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the ukiyo-e genre in the late eighteenth century. His work is recognised for its elongated, graceful figures and a refined approach to the bijin-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women.

The composition features Karakoto accompanied by her young attendants, known as kamuro. The figures are arranged with a sense of poise, their layered kimonos displaying a variety of patterns, from geometric checks to floral motifs. The background is sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the figures and their elaborate attire. Hanging paper lanterns, decorated with wisteria, frame the upper portion of the scene, suggesting an evening setting or a festival atmosphere. The muted colour palette, dominated by soft greys, blacks, and subtle pinks, reflects the sophisticated aesthetic favoured by the artist during this period.

Eishi moved away from the more exaggerated proportions seen in the works of his contemporaries, opting instead for a style that emphasised elegance and balance.
