Description
A woodblock print from the illustrated book Katsura Kasane by the Osaka artist Nichōsai, featuring expressive, calligraphic figures and integrated text.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book Katsura Kasane, produced by the Osaka-based artist Nichōsai. Active during the late Edo period, Nichōsai is recognised for his distinct, simplified style that departs from the more polished aesthetics of contemporary Ukiyo-e masters in Edo. His work often features caricatured figures and a spontaneous, calligraphic line quality that prioritises expressive movement over anatomical precision.
The composition displays two distinct scenes across a double-page spread. On the left, three figures stand in a relatively static arrangement, their forms reduced to essential outlines. The right side presents a more dynamic interaction, featuring a central figure in a dramatic stance, holding a staff, while others appear to be in motion or crouched near the ground. The background is filled with vertical columns of Japanese text, which integrate the narrative poem into the visual field. This integration is a hallmark of the ehon tradition, where text and image function as a unified whole.
Nichōsai’s approach to the human form is notably unconventional. He employs a shorthand technique, using minimal strokes to convey posture and character. This economy of line gives the figures a playful, almost sketch-like quality. The lack of shading or complex colour application directs the viewer's attention to the rhythm of the ink lines and the balance of the composition. As a representative example of Osaka-style print culture, this work offers a glimpse into the regional artistic preferences of the time, which favoured wit and a certain raw, unrefined energy. The print serves as a record of the collaborative nature of book production in Japan, where poets and artists worked in tandem to create accessible literature for a growing urban readership.
