Hogenberg, a Flemish printmaker active in the early sixteenth century, produced a series of works documenting the coronation of Emperor Charles V in Bologna in 1530. This specific plate, identified as DD, captures the rigid order and military precision of the guardsmen as they march in formation.
The composition is divided into two distinct sections. The lower portion features a dense group of soldiers, their pikes held upright, creating a rhythmic verticality that contrasts with the horizontal movement of the procession.
