Shibata Zeshin remains one of the most inventive figures of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. Trained as a lacquer artist, he applied the technical rigour of urushi to the medium of painting, often creating works that possess a unique tactile quality. This composition displays his characteristic economy of form, focusing on the tools of the artist's trade: a collection of brushes, a water vessel, and a small box.
