Theo Colenbrander, a Dutch architect and designer, produced this study of bluebells in 1919. The work displays his characteristic approach to natural forms, where he reduces botanical subjects to their essential, flowing lines. The title, Klokjes, translates to 'little bells', a common Dutch name for the bluebell flower.

In this piece, Colenbrander employs a delicate ink outline to define the structure of the stem and the drooping blossoms. He applies soft washes of watercolour in muted yellow, pale pink, and light green to fill the forms. The composition is vertical and narrow, reflecting his experience in designing ceramics and textiles where space is often constrained by the object's form.

Unlike the hyper-realistic botanical studies common in the nineteenth century, this work prioritises rhythm and movement. The lines are fluid, suggesting the gentle sway of the plant rather than a rigid scientific observation. The artist's hand is visible in the confident, calligraphic strokes that define the petals. The paper remains largely unadorned, allowing the subject to occupy the space without distraction.

Colenbrander was a significant figure in the Dutch decorative arts, known for his unconventional designs that often departed from the strict geometric patterns of his contemporaries. His work in ceramics, particularly for the Rozenburg factory, brought him international attention. This drawing provides a glimpse into his preparatory process, where he captured the essence of nature before translating it into his final decorative designs. The date, 31 January 1919, is inscribed in the upper right corner, placing this study in the later period of his career. It remains a clear example of his ability to balance decorative abstraction with recognisable natural motifs.
