Description
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, featuring a koi swimming through stylized water.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a single koi swimming through water. Eisen, a prolific artist of the late Edo period, was known for his work in the Ukiyo-e tradition. While he is often associated with bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), his kacho-ga (bird and flower pictures) demonstrate a keen observation of natural forms.
The composition is defined by the contrast between the dark, patterned scales of the fish and the pale, aquatic environment. The artist uses a subtle blue gradient to suggest depth, while the stylized aquatic plants provide a sense of movement. The koi is rendered with a focus on its physical characteristics, from the barbels near the mouth to the arrangement of the scales along its flank. The print utilizes the traditional woodblock process, where individual colour blocks are layered to create the final image.
This work reflects the Japanese aesthetic interest in the natural world, often seen in the kacho-ga genre. The simplicity of the subject allows the viewer to focus on the line work and the balance of the composition. The inclusion of the artist's signature and seal on the right side of the print confirms its origin within the Ukiyo-e school. This print offers a clear example of the technical precision required in nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the carver and printer worked in tandem with the artist to achieve the desired effect.
