Description

A detailed lithograph from 1829 depicting King William I of the Netherlands intervening to allow a citizen to present a petition.

This lithograph by Jean Baptiste Ambroise Marcellin Jobard depicts a specific historical encounter involving King William I of the Netherlands. The scene captures a moment of public interaction where a citizen attempts to present a petition to the monarch. A guard, positioned between the sovereign and the petitioner, draws his sabre in a defensive posture, yet the King intervenes with a gesture of restraint. The caption beneath the image, 'Pas de violence mon ami, remettez votre sabre et laissez approcher tout le monde', translates to 'No violence my friend, put away your sabre and let everyone approach'.

Jobard, a lithographer and inventor, utilised the medium to document contemporary political narratives and public perceptions of authority. The composition focuses on the contrast between the rigid, protective stance of the military guard and the more accessible, paternalistic image the King wishes to project. The figures are rendered with precise detail, characteristic of early nineteenth-century lithographic techniques, which allowed for a tonal range that mimics the qualities of a pencil drawing. The cobblestone street and the period attire of the crowd provide a sense of place and time, grounding the narrative in the social realities of the era.

This work functions as a visual record of a specific political anecdote, reflecting the tensions between state security and public access to leadership. The artist employs a balanced composition to guide the viewer's eye from the dramatic action on the left toward the calm, authoritative figure of the King on the right. The print captures the nuances of social hierarchy and the performative nature of royal benevolence during the early nineteenth century. It remains an interesting example of how political imagery was disseminated through print media to shape public opinion regarding the conduct of the monarchy.
