Description

A detailed woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, capturing the Tsutenkyo Bridge at Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto from a high vantage point.

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II depicts the Tsutenkyo Bridge at Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto. The work belongs to the series A Hundred Views of Famous Places in the Various Provinces, a project that continued the tradition of topographical printmaking established by his master, Utagawa Hiroshige. The composition employs a high vantage point, looking down into the valley where the covered bridge spans the ravine.

The architectural elements of the temple buildings are rendered with precise, linear clarity, contrasting with the organic forms of the surrounding trees and the steep rock faces. The artist uses a combination of solid blocks and subtle gradients to suggest the depth of the valley and the flow of the stream below. The bridge itself acts as a diagonal anchor for the composition, guiding the viewer's eye across the scene.

Utagawa Hiroshige II, born Suzuki Chinpei, was a prominent figure in the late Edo period. His work often reflects the stylistic conventions of the Utagawa school, focusing on the depiction of well-known sites throughout Japan. This print captures the serene atmosphere of the temple grounds, emphasising the relationship between the built environment and the natural terrain. The inclusion of cartouches in the upper right corner provides the necessary context for the location, a standard feature in Japanese print series of this era. The print demonstrates a technical proficiency in woodblock carving and printing, with clear outlines and a controlled application of colour. It remains a representative example of the travel-themed prints that were popular among the urban population of nineteenth-century Japan, offering a visual record of famous locations during a period of significant social change.
