In this work, Honoré-Victorin Daumier applies his characteristic satirical lens to classical mythology. The print depicts the poet Sappho at the moment of her legendary leap from the Leucadian cliff, yet the scene is subverted by the presence of a mischievous, almost grotesque Cupid figure clinging to her waist.

Daumier uses expressive, fluid line work to capture the dramatic tension of the figures against the stark, barren rock.
