Description
An elegant Neoclassical engraving by Raphael Morghen, depicting the allegorical figure of Poetry with a lyre, based on a painting by Gavin Hamilton.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts the personification of Poetry, or La Poesia. The work is based on an original painting by Gavin Hamilton. Morghen, a master of the burin, demonstrates his technical precision through the varied cross-hatching and stippling used to render the textures of the figure's drapery, the feathers of the wings, and the polished surface of the lyre. The figure is shown in a contemplative pose, looking upward with a stylus in hand, suggesting the act of divine inspiration. The inclusion of the lyre, a traditional attribute of the Muses, reinforces the allegorical nature of the subject. The inscription at the base of the print identifies the work as a dedication to Sir John Acton, a significant figure in the Neapolitan court during the late eighteenth century. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the formal dedication text reflects the common practice of the period, where high-quality reproductive prints served as both artistic displays and social tokens of patronage. Morghen's ability to translate the tonal qualities of Hamilton's painting into the monochromatic medium of engraving allowed such works to circulate widely among European collectors. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned against a simple background that draws attention to the subtle modelling of the face and the rhythmic folds of the clothing. The print captures the Neoclassical interest in classical allegory, presenting an idealised form that aligns with the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century. The clarity of the line work and the controlled use of shadow provide a sense of volume and weight to the figure, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with Morghen's studio in Rome.
