José María Velasco, a central figure in 19th-century Mexican art, produced this study of the western slope of the Cerro de Guerrero in 1874. Velasco is recognised for his precise observation of the Mexican terrain, combining scientific rigour with a refined aesthetic sensibility. His work often documents the geological and botanical specifics of the Valley of Mexico, moving away from the romanticised European traditions of the era to focus on the unique character of his native geography.

In this composition, the artist captures the rugged texture of the hillside, where sharp rock formations meet sparse, arid vegetation. The foreground features characteristic local flora, including prickly pear cacti, rendered with careful attention to their form and placement. The middle ground recedes into a dry, sun-drenched valley, while the distant mountains are softened by atmospheric perspective. Velasco employs a palette dominated by ochre, burnt sienna, and muted greens, reflecting the dry climate of the region. The light, coming from the left, creates strong shadows that define the contours of the slope, providing a sense of physical weight and depth to the terrain.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on dramatic, idealised vistas, Velasco maintained a disciplined approach to his subjects. He often spent hours in the field, sketching directly from nature before completing his canvases in the studio.
