Description
A dynamic, expressionist view of the countryside by Chaim Soutine, featuring thick, gestural brushwork and a turbulent, distorted composition.
Chaim Soutine, a central figure of the School of Paris, developed a distinct visual language characterised by agitated brushwork and a distortion of form. This work captures his approach to the natural world, where physical structures appear to buckle under the weight of his application of paint. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a turbulent arrangement of shapes that suggest movement and instability.
Soutine applied paint with a heavy hand, creating a surface that possesses a physical presence. The colours are applied in thick, directional strokes that guide the eye across the canvas, creating a sense of urgency. His palette relies on earthy tones, punctuated by flashes of red and white, which serve to define the structural elements within the scene. The trees and architectural forms are rendered not as static objects, but as entities caught in a state of flux.
This piece reflects the artist's period of intense productivity during the 1920s, when he spent time in the south of France. During these years, he produced numerous views of the countryside, often working with a speed that left the paint thick and textured. His technique prioritised the emotional resonance of the scene over precise representation. The result is a work that communicates a sense of unease and raw energy, typical of his contribution to the Expressionist movement. By rejecting the calm observation of his contemporaries, Soutine created images that feel immediate and visceral. This print captures the texture of the original oil application, allowing for a close examination of his gestural mark-making and the way he manipulated light and shadow to construct his vision of the world.
