Georges Michel, a French painter active during the early nineteenth century, focused his attention on the rural outskirts of Paris. His work often captures the atmospheric conditions of the Montmartre plains, a region that was then largely undeveloped. This painting displays his characteristic interest in dramatic weather, featuring heavy, turbulent clouds that dominate the upper portion of the composition. The sky is rendered with thick, expressive brushwork, suggesting an impending storm that casts a shadow over the horizon.

In the foreground, the terrain is depicted with earthy tones and textured paint application. A small figure with a flock of sheep traverses the path, providing a sense of scale against the vast, open sky.
