Hercules Segers remains one of the most experimental printmakers of the Dutch Golden Age. This etching, known as Landscape with a Steep Cliff, demonstrates his preoccupation with geological formations and atmospheric depth. Segers often manipulated his plates through unconventional techniques, frequently printing on prepared grounds or using coloured inks to achieve unique tonal effects.
