This etching and engraving by François Vivares, dated 1742, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of eighteenth-century printmaking. Vivares, a French engraver who spent much of his career in London, became known for his ability to translate the atmospheric qualities of oil paintings into the monochrome medium of the copper plate. This work, based on a composition by Pierre Patel, captures a scene of classical serenity, featuring crumbling architectural elements set against a backdrop of rolling hills and distant water.
