This etching by the Nuremberg goldsmith and engraver Christoph Jamnitzer depicts a scene of four putti engaged in musical performance and dance. The composition is characteristic of the late Mannerist period, where classical motifs were frequently adapted into small-scale, decorative works. Two of the winged figures are seated upon a small mound, one playing a lute while the other accompanies on a violin. To the left and right, two additional putti move in a rhythmic dance, their postures suggesting a lighthearted, pastoral atmosphere.

Jamnitzer, a member of a prominent family of goldsmiths, applied his expertise in metalwork to the copper plate. The line quality is precise and controlled, typical of an artist accustomed to the exacting requirements of engraving and chasing. The background remains sparse, featuring a single tree and a suggestion of rolling terrain, which allows the figures to occupy the primary visual space. The clouds are rendered with parallel hatching, a technique that provides a sense of atmospheric depth without distracting from the central action.

This work reflects the European fascination with classical antiquity during the early seventeenth century.
