Description
A 16th-century Persian miniature depicting the meeting of Layla and Majnun, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This miniature painting depicts a scene from the Khamsa, a collection of five epic poems by the 12th-century poet Nizami Ganjavi. The narrative follows the tragic romance of Layla and Majnun, a story of star-crossed lovers separated by social constraints. In this specific illustration, Layla visits Majnun in the wilderness, where he has retreated to live among wild animals in a state of ascetic devotion.
The composition follows the conventions of the Persian miniature tradition, employing a vertical format that organises space through stacked planes rather than linear perspective. At the base, Majnun is shown in a state of emaciation, surrounded by various animals that signify his harmony with the natural world. Layla stands before him, dressed in traditional attire, her figure rendered with the delicate line work characteristic of the period. Above them, a camel waits near a rocky outcrop, while the upper register features stylised clouds and a flowering tree, common motifs in Safavid-era manuscript illumination.
The palette relies on mineral pigments, including gold leaf for the sky and earthy tones for the terrain. The surrounding border, decorated with subtle floral motifs, frames the central narrative. Such works were typically produced in royal workshops, where calligraphers and painters collaborated to create manuscripts for patrons. The attention to detail in the flora and fauna, combined with the expressive poses of the figures, reflects the aesthetic priorities of 16th-century Persian art. This print captures the technical precision and narrative depth of the original manuscript page, offering a view into the literary and visual culture of the period.
