This etching by the French draughtsman and printmaker Israël Silvestre depicts the Bastille in Paris as it appeared during the seventeenth century. Silvestre, who held the title of Dessinateur ordinaire du Roi, produced a vast body of work documenting the architecture and urban development of France. His practice involved travelling to specific locations to create sketches, which he later translated into copperplate etchings.

The composition presents the fortress from an exterior vantage point, situated beyond the Porte Saint-Antoine. The Bastille is rendered with clear, precise lines, showing its heavy masonry, defensive towers, and the surrounding moat. Silvestre employs a characteristic etching technique, using fine hatching to suggest texture and shadow across the stone surfaces and the open ground in the foreground.
