Félix Bracquemond was a central figure in the nineteenth-century etching revival in France. This work, titled Le Corbeau, demonstrates his technical mastery of the copper plate. The composition presents a stark, almost grim scene: a large, hunched raven occupies the foreground, positioned against a stone wall inscribed with French text. The background features a gallows-like structure with additional birds perched above, creating a sombre atmosphere that leans into the macabre.

Bracquemond utilised precise, controlled lines to define the texture of the bird's feathers and the weathered surface of the masonry. The etching technique allows for a high degree of contrast, with deep blacks providing weight to the central figure, while the architectural elements are rendered with finer, more rhythmic hatching.
