Alphonse Legros, a French artist who spent much of his career in Britain, produced this etching, Le Tonnelier (The Cooper), during a period when he was deeply engaged with the revival of the etching medium. Legros was a contemporary of Whistler and shared an interest in the expressive potential of the copper plate, often favouring subjects drawn from rural life and manual labour.
