Charles François Daubigny was a central figure in the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who prioritised direct observation of nature. This etching, titled Le Verger, demonstrates his mastery of the medium. Daubigny often utilised the etching needle to capture the transient qualities of light and atmosphere, moving away from the rigid academic standards of his time.

The composition features a quiet, rural scene. A slender, bare-branched tree dominates the centre, its delicate limbs reaching towards the sky. Below, a small stream reflects the surrounding foliage, while two figures stand partially obscured by the undergrowth. The artist employs varied line weights to distinguish between the dense, textured bushes and the open, airy sky.
