Théodore Rousseau was a central figure of the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who sought to capture the untamed character of the forest of Fontainebleau. This work depicts the dense, shadowed canopy of the woods, where light struggles to penetrate the thick foliage. The composition focuses on the contrast between the dark, textured trees and the small, illuminated opening in the distance, which suggests the edge of the forest at dusk.

Rousseau employed a heavy, layered application of paint to convey the physical presence of the gnarled trunks and the uneven forest floor.
