Leda and the Swan - Correggio

A High Renaissance masterpiece by Correggio, depicting the mythological encounter between Leda and Jupiter in the form of a swan.

Correggio painted Leda and the Swan as part of a series of four mythological works commissioned by Federico II Gonzaga, the Duke of Mantua. The narrative draws from Ovid's Metamorphoses, depicting the moment Jupiter assumes the form of a swan to seduce the mortal Leda. Unlike many contemporary interpretations that focus on the tension of the encounter, Correggio presents a scene of calm intimacy. Leda sits centrally, her form rendered with the soft, sfumato technique characteristic of the artist, which allows for a gentle transition between light and shadow across her skin.

The composition is arranged within a wooded setting, where the figures of Leda and the swan occupy the foreground. To the left, putti play with musical instruments, while in the background, other figures assist with drapery or emerge from the water. The use of light creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye across the figures and into the surrounding foliage. The painting demonstrates the artist's interest in human emotion and physical grace, moving away from the rigid structures often found in earlier Renaissance works.

This work is part of the Loves of Jupiter series, which also includes Danaë, Ganymede, and Io. The series was intended for the private collection of the Duke. The treatment of the figures, particularly the soft modelling of the flesh and the fluid poses, reflects the artist's influence on later painters of the Baroque period. The original canvas has undergone various restorations and travels throughout its history, eventually finding a home in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Berlin. The print captures the delicate tonal shifts and the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, providing a clear view of the complex arrangement of figures and the interplay of light within the forest environment.
