Description
A detailed engraving by Gérard Audran after Nicolas Poussin, depicting the mythological realm of Flora and the figures from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
This fine art print reproduces the composition of Nicolas Poussin, translated into the medium of engraving by the skilled French printmaker Gérard Audran. The work depicts the mythological realm of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring. The scene is populated by various figures from Ovid's Metamorphoses, each representing a character transformed into a flower.
In the centre, Flora stands amidst a gathering of figures, including Ajax, Narcissus, and Clytie. Above them, the chariot of Apollo traverses the sky, casting light upon the scene. The composition is structured with the characteristic balance and clarity of the French classical tradition. Audran employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures, the texture of the drapery, and the atmospheric quality of the background. The inclusion of a herm, or pillar-statue, on the right side provides a classical anchor to the arrangement.
Audran was a master of reproductive printmaking, often working after the designs of major painters of the seventeenth century. His ability to capture the tonal values and narrative clarity of Poussin's original painting is evident in the delicate gradations of light and shadow across the figures. The print serves as a record of the intellectual and artistic preoccupations of the period, where classical literature and mythology provided the primary subject matter for visual art. The lower margin contains a descriptive title in French, detailing the specific mythological transformations depicted within the scene, which was a common practice for educational and decorative prints of the era.
