Description

A 1550 engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting a chaotic, allegorical scene of figures and a horse in descent, reflecting Northern Mannerist style.

This engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, dated 1550, captures the distinct stylistic traits of Northern Mannerism. The composition is dynamic and chaotic, featuring figures and a horse in mid-air, suggesting a sudden collapse or descent. The title, which translates to 'Love and Knowledge perish with the world', provides a moralising context for the visual drama. Coornhert, a polymath and engraver, often utilised his work to convey philosophical or theological messages common in the intellectual circles of the sixteenth-century Netherlands.

The visual execution demonstrates a high level of technical skill in the use of the burin. The musculature of the figures is rendered with exaggerated, serpentine forms, a hallmark of the Mannerist style that prioritised expressive distortion over classical proportion. The horse, suspended above a sphere, serves as a central element of instability. The surrounding figures are caught in various states of motion, their bodies twisted to create a sense of tension and unease. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the central action and the interplay of light and shadow across the forms.

As a printmaker, Coornhert was instrumental in the dissemination of Italianate styles within the Low Countries. His work often reflects the influence of artists like Maarten van Heemskerck, with whom he collaborated frequently. This particular piece is a fine example of the period's interest in complex, allegorical narratives presented through highly controlled, linear engraving techniques. The print offers a glimpse into the intellectual climate of the era, where classical motifs were frequently adapted to serve contemporary moral discourse. The stark contrast between the white paper and the dark, etched lines provides clarity to the complex arrangement of limbs and drapery, ensuring the viewer can trace the frantic movement within the frame.
