L'Impie - Jacob Gole

Jacob Gole, a Dutch engraver and publisher active in Amsterdam, produced this mezzotint as part of a series exploring human archetypes and moral failings. The work depicts a clergyman, or perhaps a figure masquerading as one, clutching a book labelled La Sainte Bible. His expression is one of intense agitation, with eyes wide and mouth agape, suggesting a man confronted by truths he finds deeply uncomfortable or contradictory to his own conduct.

The composition is contained within a circular frame, a common device in seventeenth-century printmaking to focus the viewer on the psychological state of the subject. Below the image, a French verse titled L'Impie (The Ungodly Man) provides a biting commentary on the hypocrisy of the era. The text observes that while the book contains the truth, it is deemed inconvenient by those who prefer to pursue worldly pleasures, games, and feasts. The verse concludes by noting that such moral rigour is no longer in fashion.

Gole was highly skilled in the mezzotint technique, which allowed for subtle gradations of tone and a velvety depth that woodcuts or line engravings could not achieve. This medium is particularly effective here, as it captures the harsh lighting on the subject's face, emphasising the lines of age and the frantic energy of his expression. The contrast between the dark background and the illuminated figure creates a sense of immediate, almost theatrical presence. This print functions as a social critique, using caricature to expose the disconnect between religious profession and actual behaviour. It remains a sharp example of the satirical print culture that flourished in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, reflecting a society that was increasingly willing to question authority through visual media.
